John Singer Sargent: A Dedicated Follower of Fashion

After three weeks of work on this portrait, John Singer Sargent described himself as a painter and a dressmaker. The Kalevala, the Finnish national epic, is a collection of folklore stories, much in the spirit of the German Nibelungenlied or Old English Beowulf.
