The 1960s saw the formation of transnational student movements and a wave of political protests around the globe. Unlike West Germany, where tens of thousands of students took to the streets and deaths occurred during clashes with police, Britain remained largely unaffected by the revolutionary spirit of the age. British authorities feared this could change if students came under the influence of the ‘prophets’ of the European student movement. Those anxieties were heightened in 1968 when ‘the icon of the West German student movement’, Rudi Dutschke, moved to the UK.
After an attempt on his life in April 1968, Dutschke was granted a short-term visa for medical treatment in the UK on condition that he would not write for publication, engage in political activity, or study for a postgraduate degree at a British university. Encouraged by his doctor, he nonetheless applied for a PhD at Cambridge and was accepted. On the point of taking up the offer, he was informed that his application for a student visa had been rejected. Alfred Willi Rudi Dutschke, commonly called Rudi Dutschke (March 7, 1940 in Schönefeld - December 24, 1979, Århus, Denmark)) was the most prominent spokesperson of the German student movement of the 1960s.
On April 11, 1968 Dutschke was shot in the head by Josef Bachmann, a young unskilled worker who was influenced by the massive propaganda campaign of the mass media owned by Axel Springer, especially the headline "Stop Dutschke now!" in the Bild-Zeitung. Rudi Dutschke recovered sufficiently to play an essential role in the formation of the Green Party (established in 1980 in Germany) by convincing the former student protesters (including Joschka Fischer) to join the Green movement. As a result in October, 1979 the Greens were able to reach the 5% limit required to obtain parliamentary seats in the Bremen provincial election. Dutschke died in 1979 from an epileptic seizure as a consequence of the brain damage he had from the assassination attempt.
