Jack Stamp is one of the most active and prominent figures on the American wind ensemble scene today. A graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and a protégé of Eugene Corporon, he returned to IUP to join the faculty and direct the band program. There he also formed the Keystone Wind Ensemble, with which he has made a number of valuable and rewarding recordings. The difference between this latter group and the IUP Wind Ensemble is not exactly clear to me, although my ears tell me that the Keystone Winds are somewhat tighter and more proficient. I suspect that they include faculty members among their numbers, while the IUP ensemble seems to be limited to students.
The program offered here can be broken down into two categories: pieces from the 1950s, the “Golden Age” of American band music; and music from the past decade or so. Vincent Ludwig Persichetti (June 6, 1915 – August 14, 1987) was an American composer, teacher, and pianist. An important musical educator and writer, he was known for his integration of various new ideas in musical composition into his own work and teaching, as well as for training many noted composers in composition at the Juilliard School.
His students at Juilliard included Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Larry Thomas Bell, Bruce Adolphe, Louis Calabro, Moshe Cotel, Michael Jeffrey Shapiro, Laurie Spiegel, Kenneth Fuchs, Richard Danielpour, Lawrence Dillon, Peter Schickele, Lowell Liebermann, Robert Witt, Elena Ruehr, William Schimmel, Leonardo Balada, Gitta Steiner, Hank Beebe, Roland Wiggins, Thomas Pasatieri,[1] Randell Croley and Leo Brouwer. He also taught composition to Joseph Willcox Jenkins and conductor James DePreist at the Philadelphia Conservatory.
