I was browsing for something interesting to read, something different. I came across Leonora Meriel's new novel, Mbaqanga Nights. The title piqued my interest: something musical, something South-African. I'm not well-versed in either South-African history or jazz but I knew enough to want to read this.

Mbaqanga Nights is the tale of Coltrane's, a mixed-race live music bar opened in 1989 when apartheid was still the rule in South Africa. Or rather, it's the tale of all the "layers of truth" that make up Coltrane's and all those who attend its opening night, the starting point of this novel. "No story exists in isolation," says the protagonist, Laurence Philip Jude, and so Meriel takes us on a great adventure that goes back generations, to a village in Cossack Ukraine where the younger Jews are starting to feel the need for hope in an ever more oppressive society at large, taking immense chances to escape elsewhere, anywhere where freedom is more than just a distant dream.

Universal Music ‘Thandi Klaasen’

Nelson Mandela’s “favourite” singer and legendary local jazz musician, Thandi Klaasen, died on the 15th of January 2017. She along with the Hugh Masekela’s, Miriam Makeba’s and other musical activists were the soundtrack of Sophiatown – a culture-rich black area of Johannesburg whose people were forcibly removed by the Apartheid regime in the ‘60s, to make way for white suburbia.

Affectionately known as Mam’ Thandi, this iconic jazz artist played a pivotal role in the return of land to Sophiatown’s original inhabitants. To honour Mam’ Thandi, we took an iconic image of the Sophiatown resistance, shot by famous South African photographer Jurgen Schadeberg, and adapted its message from one of struggle to one of tribute to a musical legend.

The tribute was featured in the Sowetan newspaper, and on Universal Music Group Africa’s social media platforms. The poster was signed by UMG’s artists including Thandiswa Mazwai, Letta Mbulu, Mahotela Queens and the likes, and was delivered to Lorraine Klassen who is the daughter of the late legend.
